Binghamton House Torn Down Five Years After Fire

A house in Binghamton that was heavily damaged by an arson fire in the summer of 2013 finally has been demolished.

Residents of a First Ward neighborhood were faced with an eyesore for nearly five-and-a-half years after an arson fire damaged the vacant structure at 10 Judson Avenue.

First District Councilman Giovanni Scaringi said the effort to remove the wrecked building had been delayed due to protracted legal proceedings.

Speaking on WNBF Radio's Binghamton Now program, Scaringi said many neighborhood residents had been working to have the damaged house torn down as it continued to deteriorate.

Although the demolition was on hold while issues surrounding the property were tied up in court, Scaringi said steps were taken by the city to prepare to remove the structure when the legal matters were settled.
