The Greater Binghamton Airport is to receive more than a million dollars in federal assistance to help respond to the coronavirus public health emergency.

The Federal Aviation Administration will award $1,356,057 to the facility in the town of Maine under an airport grant program included in an aid package approved by Congress.

Broome County aviation commissioner Mark Heefner said no specific uses have been determined for the special funding that was announced Tuesday.

Heefner said the money could be utilized to help cover airport operating expenses during the COVID-19 crisis.

The entire aviation industry has been hit with massive revenue losses in recent weeks as travel plans were altered as a result of the pandemic.

Heefner said Delta Air LInes continues to operate a single daily flight to Detroit from the airport.

Special cleaning procedures and appropriate distancing measures are being used to protect passengers and crew members on the flights.
