Broome County Fire Investigators are looking into the cause of a fire June 17 at a home near the Greater Binghamton Airport in the Town of Maine that heavily damaged the house.

The blaze at the last house on Airport Road before the airport was reported shortly at 2:38 p.m. by the crash, fire and rescue crews at the airport.

Those crews, arriving first at the scene, reported seeing smoke coming from the front of the single-family home at 2488 Airport Road (County Road 69).  The address is located between Arbutus Road and Knapp Road.  The home is located in the Town of Maine. Some media reports had erroneously indicated the address was in Johnson City.

There were no serious injuries reported.

Officials say, while the cause has not been recorded, it appears the blaze may have started in the kitchen area.

Broome County Emergency Services say firefighters from East Maine, Choconut Center, Chenango and Glen Aubrey were all on the scene.

The Maine Ambulance Squad was also on the scene along with the Broome County Fire Coordinator and the Broome County Fire Investigator’s office.

Communications officials did not know if any of the residents of the house were home at the time.

Fire damage appeared to primarily be in the front of the house, including the kitchen area although there was smoke and water damage throughout.  Officials did not know if the home would be declared a total loss.

Officials with the Southern Tier Chapter of the American Red Cross were called in to assist the residents of the home with basic shelter and other needs following the fire.
