According to the American Red Cross, home fires kill an average of seven people every day and every 40 minutes, an injury from a home fire is reported.

October is Fire Prevention Month and in an effort to reduce the number of deaths and injuries caused by home fires by 25% in five years, the American Red Cross of the Southern Tier is offering free smoke alarms to local residents.

Local fire departments will install a smoke alarm in your home and while there, they'll also provide free fire safety training on smoke alarm maintenance. But it doesn't stop there. They'll also help you develop and go over a Family Disaster Plan so that you know what to do if fire does break out inside your home and they'll also give you Emergency Preparedness tips and information.

No matter where you live, or what your income is, you can apply for installation of a smoke alarm by calling 607-785-7207.
