Earlier this week, a few of my co-workers and I were having a discussion of what New York (New Jersey) professional sports teams are most popular in our area. Surprisingly, at least to me, we didn't all see eye to eye.

I'm talking about people who reside in the Southern Tier of New York and Northeastern Pennsylvania counties of Susquehanna, Wayne and Bradford counties.

For those New Yorkers who have a favorite New York (New Jersey) professional sports team, I think we all agreed the New York Knicks would be the pro basketball favorite, even though they seem to struggle every year.

For hockey, it was a toss up between the Rangers, Islanders, Sabres and the Devils since they are our AHL hockey affiliate.

Baseball is a tough one. We have the Mets Double-A affiliate, but this is also Yankees country. None of us could give a good guess as to which team is more popular in the Binghamton area.

Talking football favorites, here's where my co-workers and I have different opinions. I say the Southern Tier, more specifically the eastern portion is Giants country. They think it's the Bills. I say, yes once you are in the western portion of the Southern Tier, more specifically when you are past the valley corridor (Sayre, Athens and Waverly.)

I grew up in the Corning area and many of my friends are Bills fans. More so than the Giants. It was a toss up for baseball between the Mets and Yankees and the Rangers were our favorite hockey team. Now, I think it tends to be the Sabres for my friends and family.

For those of you in Pennsylvania, while we realize there are New York team fans, but our guess it that more of you are fans of teams from Philadelphia. Jim Free hails from Pennsylvania, and is a huge fan of the Philadelphia Eagles, as is one of our co-workers who hails from Pennsylvania.

The main argument we have is, what team is more popular in the greater Binghamton area between the Buffalo Bills and the New York Giants. So, which is it?
