Work to Start to Convert Old Binghamton Giant Market to a Church

Construction is expected to start soon to turn a former shopping plaza on Binghamton's West Side into a place of worship.

City Church is moving forward with a $6 million project to redevelop a building that once housed a Giant supermarket on Main Street.

The 105-year-old church now operates in facilities on Washington Street downtown. It will be moving to a site on Main Street between Crestmont Road and Matthews Street. The property was acquired from Binghamton Giant Markets for $1.5 million in September.

A church representative on Tuesday said construction work at the site is expected to start in early spring.

Much of the existing shopping plaza structure will be renovated. A 13,750-square-foot addition is planned on the west end of the complex which had been home to a Hollywood Video store until 2010.

City Church is seeking buyers for its three buildings and two parking lots downtown.

Construction work at the church's new home is expected to take 12 to 18 months to complete.
