Every year my wife Chris and I file our taxes jointly and we usually get a modest refund. This year, being that she took a buyout at work, that changed for us. We wound up paying a lot in Federal taxes and we pretty much broke even after filing our New York State taxes. We usually use our tax refund each year to pay for our golf league dues, pay the yearly maintenance on the timeshare in Myrtle Beach, and we put some money aside for vacations throughout the year.

If you haven't started your taxes yet, it might be time to panic, or just file for an extension. I found a story in the New York Post that says your chances of being audited are the lowest they've been in 15 years. According to the New York Post, only about 1 in 160 tax returns were audited last year. That's the lowest it's been since 2002. And the chances of you getting audited have dropped even lower because according to the New York Post, IRS funding was slashed by almost 8% last year and over 7,000 auditing jobs went away.

I know the Binghamton Post Office on Henry Street will be open late Tuesday night for the last-minute filers. Make sure you file on time or you could be facing penalties as well as interest if you owe.
