This Is The Tallest Free-Falling Waterfall East Of The Rocky Mountains

Is it true that as residents of our hometown, there are places or attractions that we never visit, even though people from all over the state, country, and even the world, visit these landmarks on a regular basis?

I grew up in the Corning area, home to the world-famous Corning Museum of Glass and Rockwell Museum. It's been there longer than I have been alive, yet I didn't visit the glass museum until I was 21. Now I regularly visit and even take part in making your own glass projects. To this day, I still haven't visited the Rockwell Museum.

Why is that? Even some regional places that are known worldwide, I have never visited. For example, I have never visited the  Taughannock Falls just east of Trumansburg, off Cayuga Lake. If I remember correctly, my dad and I used to fish for smelt at the mouth of Taughannock Creek, but never took the time to visit the falls.

Did you know Taughannock Falls is part of a New York State Park in Ulysses and is the tallest free-falling waterfall in the Northeast? It's true, Actually, it's the largest this side of the Rocky Mountains according to the Taughannock website.

According to the New York State Parks, Recreation, and Historic Preservation, the falls are 215 feet which makes them 33 feet higher than Niagara Falls. The cliffs are almost 400 feet above the gorge. And even though the falls are the highlight of the park, there are other things to do as well in the park including hiking, camping, having a picnic, swimming and fishing.
