Steamed: That Hissing Sound Coming from the Old IBM-Endicott Site

Some Endicott residents who live near the former IBM manufacturing complex have been concerned about a loud "hissing" noise accompanied by a lot of steam at the site.

The sound has been heard day and night coming from a brick building on the Huron Campus southeast of the McKinley Avenue bridge.

Huron Real Estate Associates president Chris Pelto said the steam is being vented while a turbine used in a large chiller is being rebuilt.

Pelto said the venting of excess steam is necessary while the work is underway. He said the one boiler now in operation at the site is "producing more steam than we can use."

Pelto said he expects a muffler device will be installed this week. He said that should reduce the noise generated by the steam.

It's not known when the turbine rebuilding process will be completed.
