On Monday, April 20, 2026, the Susquehanna Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SQSPCA), located in Cooperstown, New York, had representatives in Washington County, New York, to assist the Washington County Sheriff’s Office with a suspected case of animal cruelty.

According to the release, during the previous week, Washington County Sheriff's Deputies were processing an eviction when they discovered more than a dozen hound-type dogs in need in the Town of Hebron.

The deputies contacted local dog control officers for assistance, but because the county doesn't have an animal shelter, the dog control officers began a search to find placement for the dogs.

During several inquiries, a suggestion was to contact the Susquehanna Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, since that organization routinely operates outside of its county of Otsego.

The Wdog control officers connected with SQSPCA Executive Director Stacie Haynes on Saturday, April 18th, who confirmed that her team could assist in the matter. Until that time, the dogs were being held at a boarding facility.

When I arrived to pick them up, we were asked to take in nine dogs, and I saw multiple in need of immediate care. Many appeared to be malnourished and had what I believe to be urine burns, indicating they were living in conditions I would describe as deplorable. Our team of medical professionals and dedicated animal handlers is always prepared to respond in times of crisis. We are able to spring into action for animals in need because of the support of our community. Their contributions make this work possible. - SQSPCA Executive Director Stacie Haynes

Nine dogs taken in received medical intake evaluations at the SQSPCA on April 21st.  The remaining dogs were placed with individuals in Washington County.

According to the report, donations to support the medical treatment and ongoing care for the rescued dogs can be made through the SQSPCA website.

Director Hanes also notes that the SQSPCA was anticipating the intake of several more dogs this week, so to help create space, the organization is offering $25 off every adoption through Saturday, April 25, 2026.

Community members are also encouraged to consider fostering, which helps free up critical shelter space for animals like those just rescued.
