Southern Tier COVID Cases/ Testing Numbers Up

News of expanding vaccination categories and sites comes as the number of new cases of COVID-19 and deaths also continue to grow and with more demand for testing, Broome stops taking walk-ins.

In Broome County, 156 new cases were reported January 12 for a total of 9,894. Two women in their 80s died, bringing Broome’s death toll to 198.

Cortland County reports the deaths of two newly hospitalized residents and three nursing home residents for a total death toll of 57.  There were 22 new cases for a total of 2,867.

Delaware County reports a new death for a total of 18. There were 13 new cases for a total of 930.

Tioga County added 28 cases for a total of 2,086. There have been 64 deaths and Chenango County reports 27 new cases for a total of 1,529.  There have been 28 deaths.

Broome County Health officials January 12 announced that due to the large number of people seeking rapid testing at the county's Mobile COVID testing site, walk-ins would not be accepted.  The county is going to appointment-only testing at the site currently operating at Recreation Park on Binghamton's West Side.  The tests are reserved only for those who exhibit symptoms of COVID-19.  Even those with symptoms who show up without an appointment will be turned away according to the county.
