Should We Move the 4th of July Holiday?
Let me start off by saying I'm not a huge fan of change. If it is a change for the better than I'm all for it. but just to change something for the sake of change, I think is silly. I'm also very patriotic. I'm proud to be an American citizen born and raised in the land of the free and home of the brave. I've been to Independence Hall in Philadelphia probably at least nine times. and each time I still get that same awesome feeling of pride just like I did the first time I stepped foot in that historic building in Philadelphia.
With all that being said, if the powers that be decided to celebrate the 4th of July on the first Friday of July every year, I would have no problem with that. In other words that Friday would be the national holiday. That would be the day that the post office will be closed and all the government buildings will be shut down and most of us would be off from work. That would make a three-day weekend regardless of what day of the week the 4th fell on. Like this year, the 4th of July is on Wednesday. If they were to change it to the first Friday in July, we would all be off July 6th, 7th, and 8th to celebrate the Nation's Independence. I would hate to see the Fourth lose the reverence it deserves, but we can all still celebrate on the 4th in our own special way, and then enjoy the day off that first Friday.
What do you think? I know Labor Day and Memorial Day we're both set aside for a specific reason on those dates. Whereas the 4th was the actual day we declared our Independence from England. But, just like President's Day doesn't fall on George Washington or Lincoln's birthday every year, they celebrate that on the Monday in between. Martin Luther King Jr Day does not always fall on his birthday, but we celebrate that on a Monday around his birthday. So I wouldn't be opposed to the first Friday of July being the day that we celebrate our independence as long as everybody remembers that the actual date is July 4th.
So, do you think it would be a good idea, or am I just too much of a fan of three day weekends?
