Seawolves Sweep Bearcats in America East Basketball
The Stony Brook Seawolves proved too much for the Binghamton Bearcats men's and women's basketball teams on Wednesday night. The rivalry between the two schools began at the Division III level and has continued since both programs went Division I and joined the America East Conference.
At the Events Center the Stony Brook men showed why they were fighting for the top spot in the conference. They unleashed a torrid three-point shooting attack making 13 of 25 shots from beyond the arc and rolled to an 85-59 victory. Miles Latimer led all scorers with 19 points making five of seven three-point attempts. He reeled off three consecutive triples to snuff out an early second half Bearcat rally. The much larger Seawolves also held a big edge in rebounding grabbing 51 boards compared to 33 for Binghamton.
For the Bearcats Caleb Stewart was the top gun with 16 points and 10 rebounds while Sam Sessoms notched 15 points for BU. The win was number 19 overall this season for Stony Brook and ups their conference slate to 7-2. Binghamton falls to 6-18 overall and 2-7 in America East. The Bearcats travel to New Hampshire for their next game on Saturday against the Wildcats at 1:00 P.M.
On Long Island in women's basketball Stony Brook topped the Bearcats 68-53. Rebecca Carmody and Kaylee Wasco each netted 14 points for Binghamton. The Seawolves used an early fourth quarter 16-4 run to put the game away. Stony Brook moves to 6-4 in the conference and 17-6 overall. Binghamton drops to 9-14 and 4-6 in America East. The Bearcats return home to host New Hampshire this Saturday at 2:00 P.M.
