Rebecca Rathmell of the Southern Tier Homeless Coalition and Mark Schuster of the Broome County Health Department Healthy Neighborhoods Program are the co-chairs of the new Safe Housing Task Force in the City of Binghamton and Villages of Endicott and Johnson City. Community leaders, housing experts and government department representatives make up the core group of the task force with Mayors Richard David of Binghamton, Greg Deemie of Johnson City and John Bertoni of Endicott, along with Broome County Legislator Mary Kaminsky invited to make up the Executive Committee.

Several groups over the past year or more have been looking into housing issues in the region that include availability of clean and affordable options, issues with absentee landlords, maintenance of property and affordability as a growing demand for upscale units for things like student housing has driven up rent prices and reality prices.
