Broome County Bridge Reopening Delayed, Road Work Continues Across Region

Local road construction. We hate it and we love it. Sure it slows down our commute, but the end result is, well usually, a smooth ride to wherever you are heading.

This week, here are a few things to be aware of, in addition to my report from last week. By the way, click HERE for last week's report on some important road work  notices for this week.

UPDATE: Kirkwood Bridge Rehabilitation

For those of you who travel through the Kirkwood area, here's an update on the bridge work that's been going on this summer.

According to a release today (August 17) the Broome County Department of Public Works noted that the reopening of the three County Route 20 bridges in the Town of Kirkwood has been delayed. This is due to a delay in receiving materials needed to complete the project.

The bridges were previously scheduled to reopen to traffic on September 1st, but now the expected reopening date is planned for end of the day on September 9th (2026).

The three bridges that are being rehabilitated include:

• CR 20 over Susquehanna River/Norfolk Southern Railroad
• CR 20 over NYS&W Railroad
• CR 20 over Main Street (Kirkwood)

Note: When these bridges reopen, intermittent single-lane closures will continue as work is completed, with the The overall project on schedule for completion in October of this year (2026).

Broome County Road Work For The Week Of August 17th

• Cleaning ditches on Old Newark Valley Road & Ouaquaga Road
• Culvert work on Airport Road (Chenango Bridge) & Knapp Hill Road
• Blacktop patching on Hawleyton Road / Pennsylvania Avenue
• Mowing the right of way on Broome County roadways
• Painting various Broome County roadways

Also, a major milling and paving project is taking place on Taft Avenue (County Route 029) from Country Club Road to Twist Run Road. Expect delays or seek alternate routes.

Binghamton

Continuing work around the Water Street/Henry Street area as well as Main Street.

Little League World Series

Just in case you plan on heading to Williamsport, Pennsylvania to watch the games of the Little League World Series, PennDOT has this important traffic information:

Take advantage of the enhanced real-time travel and alternate-route information available. You can find that information on the 511 PA LLWS website.

This website monitors traffic conditions on the primary travel routes to the event, including:

• Route 15 south to Route 220 to Market Street (from north)
• Route 15 north (from south)
• Interstate 80 east to Route 220 north to Market Street (from west)
• Interstate 80 west to Route 15 north (from east).

The website also shows incidents, construction, traffic cameras, and traffic speeds on the map.

Our goal is to help travelers plan ahead by providing them with as much information as possible. By sharing real-time, traffic speed information along alternate routes, drivers can be aware of traffic conditions and choose the route that works best for them as they travel to this year’s Little League World Series." - PennDOT Secretary Mike Carroll
 

PennDOT also has set up real-time travel information on changeable message signs along primary travel routes to the event. Travelers should be prepared for changing traffic patterns, slow-moving or stopped vehicles, and an increase in pedestrian traffic.

As always, NY/PA construction crews and NYS/Penn DOT ask motorists to please slow down in work zones.
