NYSEG Works to Restore Power to Thousands

New York State Electric and Gas is working on restoring power to thousands of customers, including in that area of northern Broome County where a family may have been overcome by carbon monoxide.

As of 7 a.m. December 3, NYSEG said 1,690 Broome County customers, and 119 each in Delaware and Tioga Counties were without power.  Some areas, like the Town of Triangle and Apalachin, were not expecting restoration until sometime in the afternoon while NYSEG could only say it was “assessing” restoration for some customers in Vestal, Hancock and Spencer.

The utility issued a statement at 6:49 a.m. saying it expected full restoration of the AVANGRID, Inc. system by 10 a.m.

In Pennsylvania, no estimated restoration times are available for PenElec or Claverack Rural Electric companies in Susquehanna and Bradford Counties.

PenElec had reported 794 customers in Bradford County and 832 in Susquehanna County without power early December 3.

The worst-hit areas in New York State Electric and Gas’ service range were in Allegany, Cattaraugus, Schuyler, Steuben and Wyoming Counties.  The American Red Cross set up shelters for residents in Steuben County.

NYSEG says more than 45,000 customers ere impacted by the storm with more than 6,000 in the service area still without power by 7 a.m., 36 hours after the storm first started moving through the region.

Authorities add the power situation is bound to change as heavy, wet snow, combined with wind bring down more limbs and power lines.  There were several reports Tuesday morning of lines coming down and tree limbs on roadways.
