Fairgoers, this is your time of the year! The local, county and state fair season is in full swing throughout the Southern Tier of New York State and Northeast Pennsylvania. When I think of fairs, I think food foremost. And just what food has now entered the 'fried' fair food category.

The Troy Fair (Bradford County, PA) and the Broome County Fair in Whitney Point just finished their successful 2023 run. Currently, the 181st Chemung County Fair in Horseheads runs through August 6th.

Coming up will be the Tioga County Fair in Owego, NY August 8th through the 12th, the 176th Chenango County Fair in Norwich, NY August 9th through the 13th, and the Delaware County Fair will be held in Walton, NY August 14th through the 19th.

The New York State Fair is set for 13 days from August 23rd through September 4th in Syracuse. According to the website Wide Open Country, the New York State Fair is listed as one of the best in the United States.

The website lists what they believe are the 20 best in the USA. Where does the New York State Fair land? I was pleasantly surprised to see that our state fair landed at number 5 on the list of top 20 in the country.

The New York State Fair is the oldest state fair in the United States, dating back to 1841. According to the New York State Fair website history section:

The nation’s first state fair is held in Syracuse, New York. on September 29 & 30th. There an assembled 10,000-15,000 people heard speeches by notables and viewed animal exhibits, a plowing contest, and samples of manufactured goods for the farm and home.

The top four spots on the Wide Open Country's list of 20 best state fairs from 1st to 4th - the Minnesota State Fair in St. Paul, followed by the Texas State Fair in Dallas, Wisconsin State Fair in West Allis and the Iowa State fair in Des Moines.

We're proud to have the oldest and one of the best state fairs in the county. And I'm looking forward to visiting again this year. Fried fair food, here I come!
