MLB Draft Set for Wednesday at 7 PM
Even though there is no major or minor league baseball and MLB (Major League Baseball) and the Major League Baseball Players Association (MLBPA) can't come to an agreement there will be something for fans to follow carefully on Wednesday night. The MLB draft of high school and college age players will be held. The draft gets underway at 7:00 PM Eastern time and will be aired on the MLB Network, ESPN and MLB.com.

Like most other events the MLB Draft will be vastly different than usual. There will be no large contingents of fans assembled due to concerns over the Coronavirus. The number of rounds is usually 40 but has been altered this year to five rounds. After the five rounds teams can sign an unlimited number of non-drafted free agents. The maximum amount those players can sign for is $20,000.
The New York Mets have the number 19 overall pick and many experts believe they will go for a pitcher in that first round. Consensus is you can never have enough pitching and the Mets have had numerous arm injuries develop for the past couple of decades.
The New York Yankees have the 28th overall pick. They lost their second and fifth round picks as part of the deal to sign Gerritt Cole. MLB.com in a column written by Bryan Hoch indicates experts believe the Yankees most likely will select a shortstop first.
On Wednesday night the first 37 picks will be announced. Then on Thursday beginning at 5:00 PM Eastern time the remaining selections will be announced.
With the COVID-19 pandemic and high school and college sports coming to a halt the scouts and team executives have had to rely on early prospect scouting and video reviews and breakdowns for much of their preparations.
