Major Apartment Project Being Built Near IBM Country Club Site
Construction for a 34-unit housing development is underway in a flood-prone section of the Town of Union.
The $11.7 million project site is just west of the former IBM Country Club property on Watson Boulevard. It's located east of Traditions at the Glen.
Lakewood Development of East Syracuse is receiving financial assistance from New York state government for the apartment project.
Seventeen duplex buildings are being constructed on several parcels on Oak Street, Poplar Street, Woodland Avenue and Birch Street.
Homes in the neighborhood were heavily damaged or destroyed as a result of flooding in 2006 and 2011.
The project is being developed on property that had been occupied by homes that were demolished following the floods.
No living space or mechanical equipment will be at street level in the new structures. Carports will be located under the new buildings.
A sign at the construction site indicates the expected completion date for the project is next August.
Representatives of Lakewood Development did not return calls seeking comment on the timetable for occupancy of the apartments.
