When it comes to making the decision where to lay down roots and call home, it can be hard to know where to start. Some people will be born, live, and die in their hometown. Others will go in search of better opportunities.

When people think about areas in which to plant roots, they factor in many things – from cost of living to job availability to education resources and even extracurricular activities. Finding a place that checks off all of those boxes can be hard.

WalletHub created a mathematical formula to determine which states are the very best to live in by comparing each of the 50 states based on 52 key indicators of livability. Those indicators of livability range from income growth to quality of hospitals.

After crunching the numbers WalletHub released its 2022 list of the Best States to Live in the United States and according to the finance company, the best state to put down roots in is Massachusetts. Massachusetts took the top spot with a total score of 62.65.

Not far behind Massachusetts, ranking as the second-best state in which to live in New Jersey. New Jersey took a total score of 62.01 and rounding out the top three best states is – New York! New York took a score of 60.64.

On the downside, the study discovered that New York has the lowest homeownership rate of all 50 states. When it comes to restaurants per capita, New York is tied with California and Florida for first place – so if you’re a food lover, New York is a great state for you!
