The day Led Zeppelin announced the release of their film "Celebration Day" in theaters, then to audio and DVD, the band got news of their own.

Kennedy Center Honors chairman, David Rubenstein, announced the 2012 receipients of the 2012 Kennedy Center Honors, the highest honor awarded to those that have influenced American culture through the arts.  Led Zeppelin is among those receipients.  Jimmy Page, Robert Plant and John Paul Jones will receive individual awards.

The band issued a joint statement saying America was the first place to embrace their music. "We owe a large debt to the vitality and variety of the music of the American people," they added.

Led Zeppelin has sold nearly 300 million albums worldwide and is still one of the most popular bands played on American radio stations.

Actor Dustin Hoffman, Blues artist Buddy Guy and  Russian ballerina Natalia Makarova will also be recognized at the gala in December.
