Kirkwood Man Found Dead After Big ATV Riding Event

A Broome County man who vanished while participating in a major all-terrain vehicle event in northern New York has been found dead.

Authorities say 72-year-old Frederick Moat of Kirkwood was last seen in Lewis County around 11 a.m. Saturday. He reportedly had been in the area of the Montague Inn in the town of Montague, a rural area southeast of Watertown.

The Lewis County Sheriff's Office was called shortly after 9 p.m. Saturday after Moat could not be located.

The agency said Moat was taking part in the SNIRT Run, an event in which thousands of people ride ATVs along a route in a conditions that can include snow, ice and dirt.

Sheriff's deputies and state forest rangers searched for Moat into the early morning hours of Sunday.

A coordinated search effort began at daylight with volunteers assisting law enforcement agencies.

According to a sheriff's office news release, Moat's ATV was found around 1 p.m. by volunteer firefighters stuck near a driveway off Salmon Hill Road in the town of Montague.

Moat's body was located in a heavily-wooded area following an extensive ground search.

The sheriff's office did not indicate what may have caused Moat's death.
