Breaking Ground: Broome County's Tiny Homes For Veterans

AS WNBF Radio reported on February 6, that site prep had started for the Veterans Resource Center and Tiny Homes project. Now with the groundbreaking ceremony complete, the work is underway.

Located at 530 State Street, Binghamton, the project includes 10 ADA-accessible tiny homes, and a resource center serving over 10,0000 Broome County veterans. According to the Broome County Executive's Office, the tiny homes are the first of their kind to be constructed in Broome County.

The 10 tiny homes being constructed will consist of five single and five double units. Each unit will be furnished with appliances. The resource center will have a community room, and office spaces for various organizations including the Broome County Veterans Services, Clear Path for Veterans, and Southern Tier Veterans Support Group.

The resource center will also provide a shared workspace available for other community partners who provide veteran support services with veterans, according to the Broome County Executive's Office. The Food Bank of the Southern Tier will conduct weekly mobile pantry visits to the resource center.

According to the Broome County Executive's Office, the project cost is $12.2 million, with the county funding $9.05 million. The remaining amount will come from Congressman Mark Molinaro, Senator Chuck Schumer, Senator Kirsten Gillibrand, Governor Kathy Hochul, Assemblywoman Donna Lupardo, Senator Lea Webb, Sheriff Fred Akshar, and the New York Empire State Development.

The project is slated to be completed in May 2025.
