New York Is One of the Best Places for a Winter Staycation
Winter trips can get expensive fast, especially when you add in flights, hotels, and meals out. But a new study says New Yorkers may not need to go anywhere at all to have a great winter break. Staying close to home could be just as fun and easier on your wallet.
A study from Payless Power looked at cities across the country to find the best places for winter staycations. They compared cost of living, winter weather, energy costs, and how many free or low cost attractions each city offers. New York ranked third overall in the country, right behind Minneapolis and Chicago.
New York City Has Tons of Free and Low Cost Things to Do
One big reason New York ranked so high is the number of attractions people can enjoy without spending much money. New York City has more than 200 free or low cost attractions, which is the most of any city in the country. That includes museums with free days, parks, winter events, public art, and neighborhood festivals.

New Yorkers Are Searching for Staycation Ideas
The study also looked at how often people search online for winter staycation ideas. In New York, there were more than 25,000 winter staycation searches for every 100,000 residents. That shows a lot of people are interested in finding things to do close to home instead of traveling far away.
Winter Fun Without the Travel Stress
Another reason staycations are becoming more popular is simple. Traveling can be stressful. Airports, traffic, and bad winter weather can turn a fun trip into a long headache. Staying in your own city means no packing, no long drives, and no worrying about delays.
Why Staying Local Makes Sense Right Now
With inflation still affecting households, cutting travel costs can make a big difference. When you skip flights and hotels, that money can go toward local food, small businesses, or family activities instead. To see other affordable winter staycation cities, go here.
