A Central New York fire company is reeling from what it’s Chief calls “one of the toughest days not only for me but the members..” of the fire department following the death of a firefighter during a training exercise.

Homer Fire Chief Mahlon Irish, Junior issued a statement on the company’s facebook page announcing firefighter Robert Bush was training Saturday when he fell ill. Fellow firefighters immediately provided medical assistance but Bush could not be revived.

Chief Irish said “This is the worst case scenario in my mind when we have to render aid to one of our own.”

The Chief thanked the members who took action as well as other fire departments that have offered their support.
