Endwell Man Convicted After Walking Away from Broome County Trial

An arrest warrant has been issued for a man who vanished in the middle of his weapon possession trial in downtown Binghamton.

Authorities say 40-year-old Kennard Wellington absconded from Broome County Court. According to the district attorney's office, "he left the trial during a break, and never returned."

The jury in the case deliberated for less than an hour before convicting Wellington of criminal possession of a weapon and resisting arrest. He also was found guilty of obstructing governmental administration.

The case stemmed from Wellington's arrest by Johnson City police on October 22, 2021.

At the time, investigators said Wellington was a convicted felon. They said he was charged after his vehicle was pulled over on Main Street in an evening traffic stop.

Police said the stop occurred because the vehicle's registration had been suspended for lack of valid insurance.

Wellington was accused of struggling with officers when he would not willingly leave the vehicle after it was ordered towed away.

Police discovered Wellington was in possession of a loaded .40 caliber handgun. The weapon had been reported stolen in South Carolina.

According to the DA's office, Wellington was convicted of a felony drug count in Broome County in 2007. He could be sentenced to up to 15 years in prison when he is sentenced.

Authorities said Wellington had several previous addresses in Broome County, so it's not known where he may be staying.
