A new Endwell convenience store was expected to be operational by now but the opening date has been pushed back for a surprising reason.

The Byrne Dairy & Deli unit on Watson Boulevard had been scheduled to open on October 12. But now people familiar with the project say the business may not be up and running until sometime next month.

A Byrne Dairy spokesperson was not immediately available to comment on the revised timetable for the store in the town of Union. But the primary reason for the delay apparently is related to the damage in Florida caused by Hurricane Ian.

Although the lights are on inside the newly-constructed building at 3100 Watson Boulevard, two people familiar with the situation indicated additional electrical work needed to be done at the site. They said crews who would have handled the job had been sent south to help following the hurricane.

A NYSEG spokeswoman said contract crews that were expected to do the planned work at the Endwell store were deployed to Florida to provide assistance in restoring power.

The first Byrne Dairy & Deli store in Broome County opened in Endicott in May, The Syracuse-based company is planning to open shops in the town of Chenango and Whitney Point next year.
