Is It Time To Eliminate ‘D’ and ‘F’ from The School Grading System?
When I was in school, you know back in the stone ages when we only had a hard sharpened stone to write on a rock tablet, our grades were determined by a letter, as is in most schools today from 'F' to 'A+'.
I was mostly a C student. My concentration could have been better. I also got my fair share of a 'D' grade and sometimes an 'F', mostly in the subjects of math. I hate math. Getting a 'B' or an 'A' was quite an accomplishment for me, but somehow I survived.
Time To Eliminate 'D' & 'F' Grading?
My Twin Tiers recently published an article from News Nation about a push to eliminate the 'D' and 'F' from the grading system in California schools.
"Advocates argue that assessment should be based on mastery of learning — what students have learned instead of how they test." - News Nation
According to the New Nation article, some California school districts have already done away with the 'F' grading and have limited the 'D' grading. This way, students get an opportunity to learn the material and get assistance to help them learn the subject.
Opposing Views
Those who oppose this change argue that bad grades show a student that they haven't learned the material enough and that eliminating 'D' and 'F' grading could lead to more grade inflation.
Do you think that the State of New York and the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania should follow suit with California and eliminate 'D' and 'F' from the grading system in our schools? I'm on the fence with this one, but it's certainly something to debate in the future.
