New York State Police say they responded to a report of a person in a vehicle who had been accused of harassing then threatening another person with a knife.  The suspect fled troopers and the pursuit ensued, traveling east on Route 20 at around 2:30 yesterday afternoon.

The Sheriff’s Deputy was in a squad car parked facing west at the intersection of Route 20 and 80, monitoring the pursuit with emergency lights activated when the suspect vehicle, for unknown reasons, crossed the center line and plowed head-on into the Deputy’s vehicle.

The Deputy suffered several leg fractures and was taken to Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown.

The suspect, who has not been identified, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The investigation is continuing.
