It's another first for UHS. According to an announcement, Binghamton General Hospital now has a new da Vinci 5 surgical system.

This system is designed for robotic-assisted surgery, and Binghamton General is now the first hospital in the Greater Binghamton area to use this technology in a surgical procedure.

The da Vinci 5 will enhance surgical precision and improve patient outcomes. With over 150 new enhancements, it will support surgeon autonomy and care‑team efficiency, including advanced 3D imaging and processing, which helps surgeons to see and feel more during procedures.

In addition, the new surgeon controllers will provide smoother, more precise movements, and an optimized user interface streamlines workflow for both surgeons and staff, according to the UHS announcement.

We are thrilled to be among the first health systems in our region to acquire the da Vinci 5. Our surgeons have extensive experience in robotic-assisted, minimally-invasive surgery and this new tool reflects our commitment to providing high-quality care for our patients in Greater Binghamton and beyond. John M. Carrigg, UHS President and Chief Executive Officer

The da Vinci 5 potential patient benefits include reduced trauma, shorter hospital stays, less blood loss, decreased post-operative pain, lower infection risk, and minimal scarring.

UHS has been using da Vinci technology since 2019, and the da Vinci 5 will help us expand our surgical program and deliver even more advanced care. We will continue to use our existing da Vinci systems alongside the new da Vinci 5, which complements our current technology and enables smaller incisions that may reduce recovery time. This system is a step forward in robotic surgery. It allows for smaller, more precise movements of tiny instruments inside the body during complex procedures. - Leonard S. Anderson, MD, UHS Director of Surgery
