Will Your Easter Dinner Cost More This Year? Let’s Find Out
Easter 2022 is Sunday, April 17th. When Easter arrives, I think that's when spring really arrives in my opinion. Easter was a big deal in our home when I was growing up. My parents were quite good at hiding our Easter baskets. That was a challenge every Easter, but fun to search for.
Easter dinner was also a big deal for us, as it was for many families when I was growing up. And many times we'd have Easter dinner with extended family members. Great times and memories.
As I thought about those memories, my thoughts turned to what I'd like for Easter dinner this year, and how much more expensive it may be versus years before the pandemic. I did some comparison shopping at various grocers in the Southern Tier and averaged out the price of what I would consider a typical Easter dinner.
This dinner would be for a family of four featuring a ham, russet potatoes, canned corn, dinner rolls, and for dessert, a carrot cake. Sure, your Easter dinner may be a bit different, but we'll use this one as an example.
First, for a full maple ham, the average price was about $10 a pound. So for a family of four, let's go with 2 pounds for an average price of about $20 dollars. It may be a bit more than needed, but I'm up for leftovers.

Next, we need mashed potatoes. Let's pick up a bag of potatoes at an average of 99 cents per pound. Potato serving for an average person is about half a pound, so let's pick up 2 pounds at just under $2 dollars. According to the Grow Experts website, the average person consumes between 75 and 200 pounds of potatoes per year.
What's an Easter dinner without corn? Let's pick up a 15.25 ounce of canned corn at an average price of $1.40. I think one can of corn should be enough unless your family easts a lot of corn. I can probably down a half can by myself, but that wouldn't be fair.
And let's not forget the dinner rolls. I found a pack of dinner rolls, more than enough for a family of four will run you about $3.75. I prefer my dinner rolls warned up with a slice of butter, thank you.
Finally, the dessert. In keeping with the holiday, let's pick up a full carrot cake. Now, depending on the store, it can run anywhere from 10 dollars to 25 dollars, so let's give it an average of 15 to feed a family of four.
The total cost of this particular Easter dinner? Just over $42 dollars for the items I've mentioned above. And if you are curious about the average cost of an Easter basket full of candy, according to the New York Post, in 2019, the cost averaged $50.46 in 2019 before the pandemic, and now the average price is $61.83. Happy Easter!
