Work is underway on a long-planned six-story clinical tower at Wilson Medical Center in Johnson City.

What was billed as a $132 million project was authorized by state regulators in February 2020. It's not clear if the cost of the planned expansion and renovations has increased significantly over the past two years.

The project is to add 183,375 square feet of space to the existing hospital.

The first phase of the project has been completed. That included the opening of a temporary hospital entrance on Baldwin Street and the relocation of the emergency department entrance to Harrison Street.

The new tower will be located on the north side of the Wilson campus, facing Main Street. The facility is to include a new trauma center and emergency department. It also will have a surgical support area and a rooftop helipad.

The emergency room will be three time larger than the current facility. The project also calls for the creation of 120 private hospital rooms.

A groundbreaking ceremony for the expansion and modernization project is scheduled to be held next month.

A UHS spokesperson said the project is expected to be completed in 2025.
