The major structural components of the future main fire station for the city of Binghamton have been put in place.

Building demolition at the site of the new fire department headquarters began in September 2020. Construction crews began working on the property between Court and Pine streets last August.

The 20,000-square-foot building is expected to cost $8.5 million. The fire station will have bays for five vehicles and bunk areas for several firefighters. The facility also will have a dining and kitchen area, along with a decontamination room.

City officials had wanted the front of the new fire headquarters to face Court Street. They had hoped fire trucks would be able to exit the station directly onto Court Street.

The state Department of Transportation balked at the city's request to remove an existing median to allow emergency equipment to have direct access to the heavily-traveled street.

Plans for the fire station were adjusted so trucks will exit onto Chapman Street.

Fahs Construction Group is the general contractor for the project.

The fire department headquarters that had been located at City Hall for several decades was closed in 2020 because of concerns the garage floor no longer would support the weight of heavy vehicles.

The temporary main fire station is located in a former car dealership building at Court and Carroll streets.

LOOK: Best Beers From Every State

To find the best beer in each state and Washington D.C., Stacker analyzed January 2020 data from BeerAdvocate, a website that gathers user scores for beer in real-time. BeerAdvocate makes its determinations by compiling consumer ratings for all 50 states and Washington D.C. and applying a weighted rank to each. The weighted rank pulls the beer toward the list's average based on the number of ratings it has and aims to allow lesser-known beers to increase in rank. Only beers with at least 10 rankings to be considered; we took it a step further to only include beers with at least 100 user rankings in our gallery. Keep reading to find out what the best beer is in each of the 50 states and Washington D.C.
