Burning Truck Shuts Down Vehicle, Rail Traffic in Binghamton
A raging vehicle fire interrupted traffic on a busy Binghamton street and also resulted in a pause in trains passing through the city.
Firefighters were called to the Clinton Street railroad underpass around 1:50 p.m. Thursday after a pickup truck caught on fire.
The 1989 Ford was engulfed in flames when police arrived at the scene to detour traffic just west of Front Street.
Police notified the Norfolk Southern Railway of the fire to halt train traffic that might pass over the First Ward bridge.
Smoke from the blaze filled the underpass area just south of the Broome County Health Department offices. The smoke could be seen over a wide area of Binghamton.
Once firefighters arrived, the fire was quickly extinguished but the much of the red and white truck was damaged. No injuries were reported.
The Binghamton man who was driving the vehicle told WNBF News he noticed some type of mechanical problem on Front Street. He had just turned onto Clinton Street when he realized the truck was on fire.
The driver exited the vehicle and called 911. He was not injured.
The burnt-out truck was towed away around 2:30 p.m.
