Steel is being erected at the Oakdale Mall in Johnson City as construction crews convert that former Macy's store into a massive Dick's "House of Sport" complex.

Dick's Sporting Goods announced plans for its largest store six weeks ago. It will be located on the south end of the retail center off Harry L. Drive.

The 140,000-square-foot store would serve as an anchor for what developers are calling "Oakdale Commons." It's expected to open next year.

The Oakdale Mall Macy's department store closed in early 2017. Construction workers began gutting the interior of the Macy's site in July.

In recent weeks, trucks have been hauling in tons of dirt to use as fill along the east side of the shopping center off Reynolds Road.

Spark JC LLC acquired the mall property for $7.5 million. The development group is a joint venture of the Matthews and Newman families.

The Oakdale Commons project is receiving $10 million in federal American Rescue Plan money. Broome County and the town of Union each approved allocating $5 million in what's been called "Covid relief funds" for infrastructure work at the Johnson City site.

Significant renovations have been made to the north end of the mall with development of Lourdes Hospital's fitness center and Beer Tree Brew Co's restaurant and production facility.

LOOK: Here are the 50 best beach towns in America

Every beach town has its share of pluses and minuses, which got us thinking about what makes a beach town the best one to live in. To find out, Stacker consulted data from WalletHub, released June 17, 2020, that compares U.S. beach towns. Ratings are based on six categories: affordability, weather, safety, economy, education and health, and quality of life. The cities ranged in population from 10,000 to 150,000, but they had to have at least one local beach listed on TripAdvisor. Read the full methodology here. From those rankings, we selected the top 50. Readers who live in California and Florida will be unsurprised to learn that many of towns featured here are in one of those two states.

Keep reading to see if your favorite beach town made the cut.
