Orlando Tercero was convicted in his native Nicaraguan in November of femicide and given the maximum 30 year sentence for strangling Anderson to death in March of 2018 in his Binghamton apartment.

Tercero had been charged with murder in Broome County but Nicaragua, which has no extradition treaty with the U.S., turned down numerous requests for the former Binghamton University nursing student to be returned to Binghamton to stand trial.

Tercero began serving his 30 year sentence immediately following is conviction last year but now, according to La Presna, is seeking to have the femicide conviction, related to the victim being a woman, changed to homicide to reduce the sentence to 15 years.

The article does not give the reasoning behind the appeal.  The report appears to indicate a decision on the appeal could come in the next day or so.
