Binghamton's Eastern League baseball team has a new name, move over B-Mets and welcome the Binghamton Rumble Ponies.

The buzz all over Binghamton social media yesterday was the new name given to our baseball team as the 2017 season will see a new name and logo to go along with it.

The name was chosen from a combination of fan balloting and discussions with the staff, and the history of our area with carousels.

The winning name was chosen from a contest and the person who won is identified as Nicole, she will win season tickets for life, along with a team jersey.

The Rumble Ponies will start their season on April 6th in New Hampshire and will play their first home game on April 13th against Erie.

I think you just have to let the name grow on you, and eventually it will be second nature like many of the odd sounding names we have in this area.

There are many sports teams with really odd nicknames, like the Rhode Island School of Design Nads or Montgomery Biscuits, Watersmeet (Mich.) Nimrods or Jordan (Utah) Beetdiggers, all real names.

I have always said it is a privilege to have our own professional baseball team, so we hope people will come out and support the new team in 2017.

Go Rumble Ponies!
