The Mental Health Association of the Southern Tier is working with area law enforcement officials to help their de-escalation skills in tense response situations, especially when dealing with subjects with mental illness.  MHAST has been hosting a 40 hour Officer Crisis Intervention Team training course.

The course is being taught by the Director of the Institute for Police, Mental Health and Community Collaboration in Rochester, Doctor Don Kamin.

The session is a continuing effort to help officers become familiar with resources available for individuals with mental illness and help place individuals experiencing a mental health crisis into the health system instead of the criminal justice system where appropriate.
