Binghamton Greenway Trail To Be Built
A long-discussed project to build a bike trail to link downtown Binghamton and Vestal is about to become a reality.
The 2.5-mile Greenway trial is to run west from South Washington Street along the Susquehanna River.
Mayor Richard David said money from the Upstate Revitalization Initiative will fund the $6.6 million project.
Speaking on WNBF Radio's Binghamton Now program, David said he's excited about the project. He said it will help develop a "walkable, sustainable community."
The mayor said the trail will be "somewhat elevated" to reduce the possibility of damage from future flood events. The project plans include landscaping and lighting along the trail.
The state Department of Transportation has been working on the design of the project.
