Big Lots Binghamton New York Store Facing Sudden Closure
As I was sifting through my emails over the weekends, one of the store ads was for Big Lots. I usually get a sale ad a couple of times a week, but this one had a different message to the latest sale.
This ad from the Big Lots store on Glenwood Avenue in Binghamton had the headline "Your store is closing soon." That surprised me since the lists we have seen recently did not list the Binghamton or Vestal stores.
Even the latest update found on the website of KCTV 5 in Kansas City Missouri, listing 50 more store closings, did not mention any additional in New York State. Even a recent article from Townsquare Meda's Hudson Vally News had no mention of the Binghamton closing in a new listing of store closings, although they too had been surprised by an additional Big Lots store closing in the Hudson Valley area, not previously mentioned.
On Sunday (September 29), I visited the store and sure enough, the signs were everywhere stating the store closing, including a person with a sale sign at the entrance to the plaza.
I spoke to a sales associate who did not know when the Binghamton Big Lots store would shut down but mentioned it would take at least a couple of weeks or more. There was no indication in the store as to what an official closing date would be.

The Big Lots Binghamton website also confirms the store closing, while the Big Lots Vestal Site website appears to be business as usual. Other Southern Tier and Finger Lakes Stores - Painted Post, Elmira, and Cortland all appear to remain open, while the website for the Ithaca store on Triphammer Road is listed as closing.
Big Lots filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy on September 9, 2024, announcing the closing of about 300 stores. The company notes inflation and increased competition as significant challenges leading to the bankruptcy filing.
The private equity firm Nexus Capital Management is taking over most remaining Big Lots stores and business operations. As of the end of 2023, Big Lots operated close to 1400 stores across 48 states.
