Authorities Release Name of Motorcyclist Killed in Crash on Spencer Road

Tioga County Sheriff’s officials are releasing the name of the man who died in a head-on crash on Route 96 in Candor early on June 9.

45-year-old Walter Vanderpoel of Candor was riding a motorcycle on Spencer Road at 3:11 a.m. when he traveled into the oncoming lane and collided with an eastbound pickup truck. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Route 96 in the area of Straits Corners Road was closed for several while officials with the Sheriff’s Office, Candor Fire Department, Candor Emergency Medical Services and New York State Department of Transportation worked at the scene.

The investigation is continuing.

The driver of the pickup truck was treated at the scene for minor injuries.
