Are Bridal Showers Necessary?

Over this past weekend, I had to attend two bridal showers  and throughout the years have attended numerous bridal and baby showers of friends and family. While both of these occasions - getting married and having a baby- are reasons to celebrate for you, I personally do not need a pre-celebratory party for either of these occasions in your life. Showers tend to be a little stuffy, time consuming, and for the most part boring. Let's just be honest, the reason women have showers is to get gifts for said marriage or baby. Why then, can I not just get you a gift and drop it off to you instead of wasting an entire day inside with other women I probably don't care for or know? No offense ladies, but I would rather be at the beach and I have a feeling, so would you. Am I the only one out there that shares this opinion? Don't get me wrong, I will celebrate and drink champagne at your wedding and reception but I do not want to spend my weekends attending these ridiculous showers that have for some reason become an American tradition.
