A quarter-century has passed since a 12-year-old Binghamton girl and her mother lost their lives when a Boeing 747 jet exploded and plunged into the Atlantic Ocean.

Ana Duarte-Coiner and Constance Coiner were among the 230 people who died when the  jetliner crashed off Long Island on July 17, 1996.

Ana and her mother lived on Binghamton's West Side. The 48-year-old Coiner was an associate professor of English at Binghamton University. Her daughter was preparing to enter the eighth grade at West Middle School. She was a reporter for WBNG-TV's Action News for Kids.

They were heading to Paris for a planned two-week vacation in France. The plane they and 228 others were on went down minutes after taking off from John F. Kennedy International Airport.

An investigation by the National Transportation Safety Board concluded the crash was caused by a fuel tank explosion.
