Eric Clapton was invited to replace Anthony "Top" Topham in the Yardbirds.

In 1968
Cream began its farewell tour with a show in Oakland, California.

In 1969
Crosby Stills and Nash released the single "Suite: Judy Blue Eyes."

In 1970
Janis Joplin was found dead in a hotel in Hollywood.  She was 27. (and thus inducted into the '27' club)

In 1974
Thin Lizzy played their first gig. (And it was with sweet rock music)

In 1980
Fleetwood Mac gave the USC Trojan Marching Band a Platinum record of the album "Tusk," to which the California school ensemble contributed.

Queen's "Another One Bites The Dust" hit number one on the pop singles chart.

In 1982
Squeeze announced that the group was breaking up. (and Big Wally cried)

In 1986
CBS anchor Dan Rather was attacked by two people who kept asking, "What's the frequency, Kenneth?"  The incident inspired R.E.M.'s song, which uses that phrase as its title.

Boston's "Amanda" broke into the Top 40.

In 1994
The Eagles reunion tour was cut short when Glen Frey needed emergency stomach surgery. (They found that he was actually pregnant with David Crosby's baby)

Crosby Stills and Nash's 25th anniversary tour was cut short when David Crosby fell ill.  He needed a liver transplant. (which he got in an equal exchange from Glen Frey)

In 1996
Van Halen announced that singer Gary Cherone would replace Sammy Hagar as lead vocalist for the group.  Cherone had previously worked with Extreme. (and it's still working out to this day. What? HE'S STILL NOT WITH THE BAND?)

In 1997
Bon Jovi guitarist Richie Sambora and wife actress Heather Locklear had a daughter, Ava Elizabeth.

In 2002
Bruce Springsteen performed "Thunder Road" at the dedication ceremony for the Lenny Zakim Bunker Hill Bridge in Boston.  Zakim, who was a friend of Springsteen's, was a civil rights activist who died of cancer in 1999.

In 2003
Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band wrapped up a tour in support of the album "The Rising" with the last of three shows at New York's Shea Stadium.  Bob Dylan made a guest appearance at the show.

Hell on Earth cancelled plans for a webcast of a concert in which a fan was to commit suicide on stage. (big gigantic eye roll)

In 2004
Motley Crue guitarist Mick Mars had hip replacement surgery at a hospital in Los Angeles.  The operation was related to his treatment for a degenerative rheumatic disease.

Elton John went on an obscenity-laden tirade against Madonna at "Q" magazine's Q Awards ceremony in London.  While accepting a trophy for songwriting, he accused the "Material Girl" -- who was a nominee for Best Live Act -- of ripping off her fans by charging well over 100-dollars a ticket for her concerts, during which he claimed she lip-synched.

Buffalo Springfield bassist Bruce Palmer died of an apparent heart attack.  He was 58.

In 2005
Badfinger drummer Mike Gibbins died in his sleep at his home in Florida.  He was 56.

In 2007
Sammy Hagar kicked off his annual Birthday Bash at his Cabo Wabo Cantina in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, playing the first of six free concerts in the ten days leading up to his 60th birthday. (If only he owned a bar in Binghamton...)

Procol Harum frontman Gary Brooker appealed a ruling regarding the hit "Whiter Shade of Pale."  In 2006 a British judge awarded the band's keyboardist Matthew Fisher 40-percent of the song's copyright and future royalties, and Brooker was looking to have the decision reversed. (and Gary turned a whiter shade of pale)

In 2009
John Mellencamp and Neil Young were among those hosting the annual Farm Aid concert, which took place in St. Louis, Missouri.

U2 was the headliner for a special (RED) Nights concert at New York's Carnegie Hall.  The Turtles' Flo and Eddie were among the other performers at the event, dubbed "Hal Wilner Presents: An Evening With Gavin Friday And Friends."  Money raised went to the Global Fund to Fight AIDS.

In 2010
Paul McCartney was on hand to support his daughter at the Stella McCartney Ready To Wear Spring/Summer 2011 show in Paris.

In 2011
Queen received the BMI Icon Award at the annual BMI London Awards.
