Brutal World of Youth Football Exposed in ‘Friday Night Tykes’ [VIDEO]

Youth football goes under the microscope in an upcoming reality TV series that could have people talking.

‘Friday Night Tykes’ is a 10-part series on Esquire Network that promises to be the pee wee version of HBO’s acclaimed ‘Hard Knocks.’ Five teams comprised of 8- and 9-year-olds in a San Antonio league are at the center of the documentary and this preview has received a lot of attention because of the intensity parents and coaches seem to have, with some appearing not to care about injuries, kids’ feelings or the possibility that maybe the children should just be having fun.

There are also some nasty hits in the preview, which may come under fire in the wake of the dilemma the NFL has about head injuries suffered by former and current players.

The NFL says, “The trailer is definitely troubling to watch” and that the league at the center of ‘Friday Night Tykes’ does not participate in the Heads Up Football Program, which tries to enhance safety at the youth level of the game — a critical plan, given the fact participation among kids has been tumbling.

Interestingly, Esquire is owned by NBC Universal. NBC, of course, broadcasts ‘Sunday Night Football.’

‘Friday Night Tykes’ premieres January 14 at 9 p.m. ET on Esquire Network.
