Vestal New York Officer Recognized For Life Saving Actions

In a world where we are bombarded with bad news, it's such a wonderful feeling when we read and hear about good news. And that's what this article is about.

This brave action story goes back to November 2023 from the Vestal Police Department. According to a Facebook post from the Vestal Police Department,  the final Vestal Police Officer of the Quarter for 2023 was recently announced.

That person is Officer Maxwell Kelley. The Vestal Police Department Facebook post recalled a fire that the department responded to on November 28, 2023. Officer Kelley was the first of the Vestal Police on a residential kitchen fire scene.

According to the Vestal Police Department Facebook post, Kelley found an elderly female standing in the front doorway of her house, aided her, and was informed that the woman's husband was still inside the home.

Officer Kelley located the male in a bedroom. The male was unable to walk. Kelley picked the man up and carried him out of the house, away from the smoke.

Vestal Police assisted, placing the husband and wife in their patrol cars to keep warm until they could be transported to the hospital by the Vestal EMS. The Vestal Police Department's Facebook page notes that Officer Kelley was evaluated at the scene for smoke inhalation.

The fire was quickly knocked down by the Vestal Fire Department and the Vestal EMS tended to the residents.

The VPD notes that it is common that police officers are the first to arrive at an emergency call and that is why they are trained to be prepared to perform tasks not generally associated with police work.
