I was speaking with a couple of friends who live at a campground near Binghamton during the warm weather months, and winter in Southern California. Every year on the way to the East Coast and back, they like to stop off at places of interest.

It's always been my desire to travel around the country for a few weeks and discover the wonders of rural U.S. Maybe someday when I retire. This couple talked about some of the things they love to visit, and a lot of those places are labeled "the largest" and listed in the Guinness Books of World Records.

Our country is full of oddities and wonders labeled the largest, like the largest pencil, the largest ball of twine, the largest ball of paint, the largest tire, and the list goes on and on. Sure that may sound silly, but you know you want to visit them just the same.

And did you know there's a 'largest' item just a couple of hours east of Binghamton? Well, there sure is. Mount Tremper, New York is home to the World's Largest Kaleidoscope. It is located within a converted silo on the property of the Emerson Resort.

According to the Emerson Resort website, the silo is 60 feet tall and just over 37 feet in diameter. The Guinness Book of World Records listed this silo as the world's largest Kaleidoscope in 1997, designed by the Kaleidoscope artist, Charles Karadimos. The experience is called a Kaleidoshow.

The Kaleidoshow is a visual and sound experience for all ages within the silo and viewed from the bottom up.  Through tapered mirrors, the Kaleidoshow images are transformed into fractal figures and the storytelling begins.  To view the show you can lie on the floor or lean against the wall.  - Emerson Resort & Spa

Can you imagine taking in a view of a Kaleidoscope this large? Check out a couple of videos of the Emerson Kaleidoscope in Mount Tremper, New York, below.
