Even as deaths from COVID-19 continue, New York State is seeing its 48th day of a decline in the coronavirus positivity rate.

In the daily update, Governor Andrew Cuomo May 23 announced the state’s positivity rate was at .92% with 1,073 new positive test results returned on May 22.

Still, there were twelve more New Yorkers who died from COVID-19, bringing the death toll to 42,594.

Broome County May 21 also reported another death bringing the county pandemic death toll to 343. There were no other new deaths from COVID-19 reported in the Southern Tier over the weekend.

New cases, however, are reported every day.  Broome had 18 new cases to report on May 21. Chenango County had five new cases on May 21.  Cortland County reported eight additional cases Friday, five on May 22 and two on May 23. There was no update reported from Delaware County while Tioga County reported 11 new cases on May 21.

State Health Department officials are crediting the slowly growing number of people getting vaccinated against COVID-19 as helping to drive the infection numbers down.  The largest number of residents getting the shots now are younger New Yorkers as people as young as 12 are now cleared to receive the vaccine.
