"Gift card draining" is a new scam that authorities are warning the public about.

Gift cards have become super convenient, a gift for someone who is impossible to shop for, and a great quick-grab present. But, authorities are urging the public to be aware while purchasing a gift card off the rack.

Scammers will go to stores and take the gift cards off the rack and record the number of the card AND scratch off the security code of the card. The thieve then replace the strip and place the card back on the rack.

When the card gets loaded with money, the thieves can then easily drain the card since they have access to all the numbers associated with the gift card.

Authorities and retailers are suggesting the public purchase gift cards that come pre-packaged in packaging that protects the magnetic strip and covers all numbers associated with the card.
