Sheriff’s officials say 70-year-old Edmund Jones of Walton had stopped his vehicle on the shoulder of State Route 10 at around 12:30 p.m. October 23 to help a turtle crossing the road when he walked into the path of an oncoming truck and trailer and was hit by the vehicle.

Jones was taken to Delaware Valley Hospital with serious internal injuries before being airlifted to Albany Medical Center.

Sheriff’s Deputies requested the New York State Police Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Unit inspect the dump truck and trailer driven by 62-year-old Edward Sprague of Walton.  Following that inspection, the vehicle was taken out of service due to a number of safety violations.

The investigation is continuing.
